Big 12 Schedule Expected By End of January

MORGANTOWN -

This is not only the time of year for college football coaches to change jobs, but it is also the time of year that conferences release football schedules for the upcoming season.

WVU Athletic Director Oliver Luck insists the Mountaineers will be playing in the Big 12 in 2012, "There is no question that we will be playing a Big 12 schedule in all of our sports for the '12-'13 academic year," Luck stated. "We are telling our coaches to begin their non-conference scheduling based on the Big 12. We are committed to the Big 12 and I have no doubt that we are going to be in the Big 12 for the '12-'13 academic year."

That statement was made despite the ongoing legal battles between West Virginia University and the Big East.

The SEC, Pac-12, Big Ten and ACC have already released their 2012 schedules. The Big 12 and Big East have not.

Per its television contract, the Big 12 must have its schedule released by February 1.

When asked if West Virginia is on the 2012 schedule, Big 12 Associate Commissioner of Communications Bob Burda replied, "I am not at liberty to discuss that at this point." Burda also refused to indicate if the Big 12 is piecing together two schedules, one with WVU on the schedule and one without it.

Missouri and Texas A&M are leaving the Big 12 for the SEC. Both of those schools appear on the 2012 SEC football schedule as conference opponents. The addition of TCU leaves the Big 12 at nine schools for the 2012 season. Its television contract requires it to provide a league schedule for ten teams.

Burda confirmed Missouri and Texas A&M are not on the 2012 Big 12 schedule.

Simple math and deduction reveals that without Missouri being held in the Big 12 until West Virginia's arrival, either the Big 12 is going to issue a schedule with only nine teams on it and not fulfill its television contract, or WVU is on the 2012 Big 12 schedule as a conference member.

Big East Associate Commissioner John Paquette confirmed the Big East is continuing to work on its schedule. "Typically our football schedule is released in February," Paquette said. "But, we are not commenting on a timeline for the release of this year's schedule."

Legally speaking, the Big East would hurt its ongoing court case by not putting West Virginia on its 2012 conference schedule.

As a result, West Virginia University will likely find itself in the unique situation of appearing on two different schedules.

If you believe Oliver Luck, pay more attention to the one issued by the Big 12 than the Big East.

Big East just sucks. No other conference losing teams acted like they are acting towards WV. Drama for no reason. By the way, WV just destroyed their bowl opponent like there was no tomorrow LOL. Big12 will have a new look in 2012. An East Coast team and a mid-major giant will be joining an already tough league.

It's sad how these TV networks bow their chests and think they have control over these conferences.  Or do they?  It's like they're basically saying, "Have your schedule by Feb. 1st or else!"  WTF?!

The latest articles I've read say that the judges in both WVU-Big East lawsuits have ordered the two sides into mediation.  That leads me to believe that neither court is going to issue an order forcing WV to stay in the Big East.  That means WV is leaving whether the Big East likes it or not.  The most favorable decision the Big East is going to get from the court is an order for financial compensation, and that price would be higher today than it would be after the court demands WV to pay.  So the Big East would be wise to start negotiating now.  They should've done this from the start, but they were too stubborn.

The way they can make this all as painless as possible for everybody is for the WV to pay the Big East their full buyout, then the Big 12 pay off the Big East with A&M and/or Mizzou's buyout payment.

Judges do not issue orders of action like that.   They only issue orders to pay financial damages.   For example, if you hire me to paint your house for $1000, and I only paint half of it, no judge is going to order me to finish painting the rest of the house.    More likely, you'll have to get an estimate of how much it will cost to finish the job, and I may be held liable for the financial damages.   In this case, it's highly unlikely that any judge will ever order WV to play a Big East schedule.  More likely (in the event that WV loses the case) the Mountaineers will have to pay compensation for an amount that the BE can show as damages for money that they lose out on by WV breaching it's contract.   West Virginia will be here next year.

I think you're exactly right.  An order like that is just unenforceable.  The court probably could issue that order, but it would be pointless.  Even with a judge's order, the court can't force WVU to do anything, all they can do is set consequences in case they don't follow the order.  WVU would gladly ignore the order and pay those consequences.

The Big East is just trying to accomplish a few things with this court case, otherwise they could just settle a fee and be done with it.  A) Stall in the courtroom long enough that WVU has no choice but to stay another year.  (not likely at all, but worth a shot),  B)  Force WVU's and the Big 12 into a deeper legal hole so they can get an even bigger payoff in the end, and C) Make this fight so messy and ugly that it sends a message to Syracuse and Pitt to not even think about leaving any earlier.

Is it weird that I think a Big 12 that swapped A&M/MU for TCU/WVU is even better? Yowza. Glad we cut and run  ;)

Been hearing that OU may be playing @Morgantown on 9/22 to open the Big 12 schedule. Should be a great road test early in the season for the Sooners.

So far, OU's schedule looks good. WVU/ND/TCU/UT/OSU/KSU...

The new schedule is in the hands of the schools and networks, but isn't going to be publicly released until next week.

Tech teased part of the schedule by saying Oklahoma, Texas and West Virginia will be coming to Lubbock.  That's not a bad home slate.  Since OSU made two straight trips to Lubbock, I assume that's a road game, and it would be a solid bet that TCU would be a road game.  If they follow the regular rotation, which might not be possible, we would be @Iowa State, @Kansas State, Kansas and Baylor.

If it's already leaked that Oklahoma is going to Morgantown and West Virginia is going to Texas (which I read elsewhere) and Texas Tech, then that's a good hint as to what the schedule holds for others.

Big East is trying to get Boise State to join them early to offset the loss of WV.

I read a West Virginia media report that said the delay now is not entirely tied to just WVU and the Big East, and that it's "other schools" holding it up.  This could certainly explain that.

As it stands now, whichever conference doesn't have WV next season will get stuck playing 11 game schedules because it's too late to find a viable replacement.  I said all along that the Big East playing hardball instead of just negotiating from the start is nothing but a stall tactic.  They needed time to find another solution, and needed to keep WV around long enough to leverage their buyout as much as they can.

Even though it's not officially release yet, and there are reportedly still some changes being made, Texas Tech jumped the gun and released their 2012 schedule.

http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/college-sports/texas-tech-red-raiders/20120210-tech-nology-glitch-texas-tech-s-mobile-app-releases-full-football-schedule-early.ece

Sept. 29 - at Oklahoma State
Oct. 6 at TCU
BYE
Oct. 20 - West Virginia
Oct. 27 - at Iowa State
Nov. 3 - Kansas
Nov. 10 - Oklahoma
Nov. 17 - at Kansas State
Nov. 24 - Baylor (Arlington)
Dec. 1 - Texas

A few interesting things to note.  Tech's first conference home game is 4 weeks into the conference schedule, Oct. 20.  Also, it appears A&M has officially been replaced as  TCU-Texas has been confirmed as a Thanksgiving game and Texas closes the season @Tech.

I wonder if UT is now viewing Tech as the biggest instate rival given that the aTm-UT series is on ice right now?

After a year of following nothing but Pac-12 football, I will follow the other conferences this coming season so I think that UT-Tech could be big this year.

Texas certainly doesn't view anybody as their equals, and we're not competitive enough against them to consider us a huge rival.  In the minds of Texas fans, they have 11 guaranteed wins a year along with the swing game against Oklahoma.

At least you were able to beat OU on the road...that should mean a win in Austin might not be that far off.

And here it is, the 2012 Big 12 football schedule...

http://www.big12sports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=10410&ATCLID=205379627

The leaked schedules were not right, there have been some tweaks since then.  All but two teams (Tech and Iowa State) have games on December 1, and none of those games are traditional rivalries (ie, OU-OSU).

TCU got it worse than Tech.  Their actual introduction to Big 12 football begins October 20th.

Indeed!  We'll be fortunate to win 2 of those, if not 1.  I like that though, our quality of games has definitely gone up.  Though next year's home schedule kind of sucks.  It's kind of strange how the games broke out, one year we get all the flagship schools at home (UT, OU, WVU, KU) and the next year we get all the "State" schools at home (KSU, ISU, OSU).  At least it's easy to remember.

TCU got it worse than Tech.  Their actual introduction to Big 12 football begins October 20th.

Indeed again!  It wouldn't surprise me to see TCU start off 4-0 in conference, only to finish 4-5.  They only got 4 home games this year, and at least 2 of them are not easy.  The biggest rude awakening waiting for TCU in the Big 12 is just how far down the ladder they rank in the Dallas/Fort Worth sports market.  They will be outnumbered in their own stadium by OU and Tech fans, and KSU will give them a run for their money too.  Texas and Okie State fans will do the same next year.

On that subject, I think West Virginia can turn their isolation into an advantage.  They have a chance to carve out a reputation as the most difficult venue in the Big 12 for opposing teams because I don't see many fans making that trip.  Plus, it could be significantly colder up there than most Big 12 teams are used to if you play a late season game.
