You guys gotta realize who the Big East is. They're a 50/50 conference... half large state schools with huge enrollments and half small Catholic schools. That means the votes are split 50/50. They couldn't vote out a school like Georgetown or St Johns even if they wanted to. They also don't have room to add another outsider because that would put their membership at 17 schools. They could offer a school football-only membership, but who would accept that? Anybody who goes to the Big East is gonna want a slice of basketball action. So really, the Big East only has 8 candidates for expansion... the same 8 schools they already have that don't play football. Unfortunately, only 3 of those 8 even play football at all... Villanova (FCS), Georgetown, (D-III), and Notre Dame (the unicorn of college football). The Big East has no leverage to negotiate, their choices are to kick out one of their members to make room for somebody, promote from within (which they've done), convince Notre Dame to join completely, or expand an already overwhelmingly huge conference and cumbersome conference to fit more teams.
