Egypt crushes them 4-0... they get helped out with 3 red cards from Algeria.  What do they call that kind of play, is it "chippy"?  Can't imagine how undisciplined a team needs to be to get 3 ejections in one game!  This is the team everyone is saying the USA needs to worry about in the World Cup.  Egypt, the 2 time defending African champ, is the team the US crushed in the Confederations Cup last year, I think we can handle Algeria next June.

Speaking of the World Cup, appears there's a little locker room turmoil in the England camp.  English courts ruled that the press is allowed to report a story about Chelsea/England national team captain John Terry and his affair with the girlfriend of one his teammates, Wayne Bridge.  Bridge and Terry were teammates at Chelsea until last January, and Terry has been married for several years now.  There's speculation that Terry will be stripped of his captain role with the English team.  Distractions, distractions, distractions... anything that gets the English minds off the opening game!

This story is getting worse and worse... appears John Terry paid for his mistress to have an abortion.  http://www.newsoftheworld.co.uk/news/712686/John-Terry-got-secret-lover-pregnant-at-start-of-affair.html  The websites are branding the story "England in Crisis".  Can't be good news leading up to the team selection.  I don't mean to make light of a serious subject like that, I can't imagine how big a scandal that would be if it happened here.  This is the English equivalent of ARod impregnating a fellow Yankee's wife.

Wow!  I had no idea such similar things happened to the 1998 US team.  One thing doesn't make sense though, there were clearly chemistry issues on that team, but apparently kicking John Harkes off the team had the opposite effect the coach had in mind.  One would think that kicking the offending player off the team would be the right thing to do, but apparently it was the wrong button to push.

Regardless, I'm not sure what parallels can be drawn to this year's England team.  Each and every team in sports has a different dynamic between the players.  England coach Fabio Capello is going to decide this week whether or not John Terry remains as captain.  Surely there's no way he kicks Terry off the team, he's on the short list of best players in the world at his position.  Wayne Bridge on the other hand is expendable and has contemplated retiring from international soccer.  What I'll be curious to see is how the team responds to the decision made by Capello.  Also, like the US team in 1998, how the team responds to that decision once there's a little adversity at the world cup.

Good to see Grant Wahl getting full time soccer coverage now.  CNNSI is stepping up their coverage, I only hope it lasts past the World Cup.  That guy must have some cool stories, he's traveled to a lot of obscure places, Uruguay, Angola, South Africa, and that's just in the last few months.  Fox Soccer Channel is going HD this month, and ESPN has stepped up their coverage too.  All across the board, there's more coverage now.

The John Terry scandal and it's comparison John Harkes is nothing more than an interesting comparison.  I'm sure things like this happen all the time in pro sports, but the different ways it gets handled are interesting.  Fabio Capello has forgotten more about soccer than Steve Sampson will ever learn.  Prior to coaching the US team, Steve Sampson was coach at Santa Clara university.  Prior to coaching England, Capello was coach of AC Milan, Juventus, Roma and Real Madrid where he won a league title at each stop.  So he knows how to handle big egos and win at the biggest stage.  The criticism over Terry is kind of misplaced, it's ridiculous to throw him off the team over this, but it's definitely a case where he needs to be taken down a few notches and made to realize that he is but a piece of a larger puzzle.  Terry is probably the biggest egomaniac on the team, he needs to have any leadership role taken away and given to someone who knows how to do it, like Steven Gerrard.

Lastly, the part of the story that is getting totally ignored is the abortion part.  I don't know the religious and political ideologies of English society, but in the US that would be downright shameful.  Rick Pitino's scandal last year blew up for that main reason, and look at all the uproar over the Tebow commercial.  I'm surprised that's not even being talked about in the coverage.

2022 World Cup could be the right timing for US Soccer in terms of competing with others in the world. Seriously what does FIFA want to hear since the US has all the stadiums pre-built (thanks NFL) and not alot has to be done, the melting pot that is America supported this event in 1994 and will again.

I am extremely confident the World Cup will be in the USA in 2022.  After two cups in third world countries like South Africa and Brazil, only awarded to those countries because FIFA owed the region/continent a World Cup after a full generation of ignoring them, FIFA will want to bring the Cup to countries that can make them massive profit in every way possible.  By that I mean countries that will sell out every game, attract a million tourists and more importantly be in an attractive time zone for TV partners.  They'll first bring it back to Europe, most likely in England, in 2018, then to the USA in 2022.  Europe and North America are the two largest viewing markets in terms of revenue, they'll want the games being played at an attractive hour for those TV markets, which means Japan or Australia really has no shot of hosting the 2022 World Cup.  Because of the global nature of the World Cup now, I can see FIFA backing off of their unofficial "every other World Cup in Europe" stance and maybe doing two WC's away from Europe and one on the continent.

My top five places I'd like to see future World Cup's

1. USA, we've got the stadiums to make it successful and how else do you continue the growth of the game
2. England, they are maniacs about the game living and breathing it plus hosting the 2012 Olympics they have updated their facilities country wide
3. Netherlands, this part of the globe hasn't hosted a WC and should be given the chance sooner than later
4. Mexico, finacially I don't think they could pull it off but I think this be a good/cool venue for the Cup
5. Spain, another scenic location but soccer friendly country which would support the event

I'm going to the Manchester City vs. Club America game at the Georgia Dome next week.  Should be an interesting mixture of fans, I'll be sure to take plenty of pictures.

Uh yeah, never again am I going to pay 80 dollars to watch 3rd string guys play for United.  That was a joke.  Giggs and Scholes played, but that clearly wasn't enough.  Not to mention KC's second goal did NOT cross the line...AT ALL.  It was lame.

E, don't know what replay you say but it did and the RED on Conrad was bunk also when later in the game ManU got a yellow. Didn't see the last 30min since I had a wedding to go to.

Time zones will play a huge part in this too I think.  Australia is 8 hours ahead of Western Europe and 13 hours ahead of the East Coast.  Those are the two biggest regions in terms of TV broadcast rights being paid, and those networks won't want to dish out big money for events that are taking place at noon on a weekeday, or 7am on a weekday.
