09-10 Mizzou Basketball
« on: November 09, 2009, 10:35:40 PM »
I went to the exhebition game last friday against Truman State.  People around here are pretty excited about this team.  The student section was packed (a nice change from previous seasons at Mizzou Arena), and the total attendance was 8000+.

It is hard to judge anything from playing a D2 school, but I have to say, freshman Mike Dixon can play some ball.  The lack of a big man is going to hurt us for sure this year.

We might not win as many games, but this team is going to be fun to watch.

It's good to see a Mizzou thread up and running.  We need more threads like this for individual teams.

Are you enjoying college life by going to the games as a student?

Student section is infinately better than the alums...football and basketball.  Mizzou students have been showing up in force in both football and basketball.  Over 12,000 student football tickets were sold (I think that is the highest number of student tickets in the Big 12).

Last year there was a general lack of interest until we actually started playing teams people had heard of as far ask basketball goes.  A couple of good games coming to Columbia this winter, though.  Oregon and Georgia are both coming into town, although the Georgia game is over winter break.

Exebition game #2 tonight.  Not as pretty as the first, but a lot stiffer competition.  Wow Mike Dixon can play though.

HUGE news after the game.  Tony Mitchell (*****), #15 rated player in the country out of Dallas commits to Mizzou following his visit.

Tony Mitchell is the second player who made a verbal commitment to K-State and was swayed by his mother to play for Mike Anderson's Missouri team. What exactly does Big Papa Mike have on these women?

I hope Mitchell can have just as prolific a career as Hannah. :)

Who's Hannah?

Exactly. Stephon Hannah.

What can I say?  He is a charming guy.

Anderson: Is there a Mr. Mitchell.... Mrs. Mitchell?

Mama Mitchell: He's on vacation.

Need to vent a little about how Mizzou does its student tickets...

They sell basketball/football combo tickets.  This year they sold more than 12,000 of them.  Everyone fits in the football stadium, but they only give out 4000 basketball tickets.  There are 4 pick ups.  2 of them are OOC games, the 3rd is Big 12 games including Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, Iowa State, and Texas.  I went to pick up the 3rd set today, they are gone.

Fair enough that I didn't get the 3rd with fair warning, but come on.  Don't sell 12,000 combos if you're only going to give out 4000 tickets.

I believe K-State did the same thing this year. I don't think it worked well at all. Mostly, it lowered the number of football tickets sold.

I like the combo option, and at a reduced price, but don't oversell your basketball tickets by more than say 1.5-2.0

Thank God one of my friends is going to study in South Africa next semester but decided to pick up his tickets in case someone else needed them.  I was just about to pay $100 for them...but got them for free!

Much better to watch the Tigers in the Paige, than away.

At this point, yes it is.  Tigers seem to be a completely different team at MIZZOU ARENA.  Saturday's win is their 24th straight home win (I think)...which is good enough to be the nations 3rd longest home winning streak behind Pitt and some other school...

Mizzou has a pretty good week beating UT by nearly 11 points (barring 2 late 3s in the last 30 seconds of the game) and going on the road to beat Nebraska, something Mizzou hasn't been so good at the past few years.  That win in Lincoln gave Mizzou it's first back-to-back 20 win seasons in 7 years.

The schedule doesn't lighten up any, as trips to Manhattan and Ames and a visit from Kansas all loom large.

On a side note, Mizzou is the only 20 win team from a major conference not to be ranked.

So, those last 6 points by Texas don't count?

They do...just saying the game wasn't as close as the score made it look.

Good game against Colorado tonight...never close.  I was hoping to hit 100...but Mike Anderson put in the bench warmers.  Should be a great game in Manhattan this weekend.  Looking forward to it for sure.

Playing for second place in the conference on Saturday. The 'Cats can't afford any lapses against Missouri.

Mizzou is hitting it's stride.  I'm not predicting a W for the Tigers this weekend...but it wouldn't surprise me.  One of my favorite things about Mike Anderson's teams is they always play their best basketball come March.

Missouri is in a tougher situation now because of Baylor's win last night over A&M.   The Tigers are in 3rd place, but could easily finish 5th (due to tie-breakers) and have to play on the Big 12 Tournament's opening day.

You're exactly right. Both A&M and Baylor can make it to 11-5 and hold tie-breakers over Missouri. Both of those South teams do not have tie-breakers against Kansas State. K-State needs one more win to finish above all the South teams. Missouri, hypothetically, needs all three.

If K-State wins on Saturday, they should finish at least 12-4 and would be uncatchable by all the rest.

If Missouri wins on Saturday, they can make 11-5 or an unlikely 12-4.

Mizzou stays in 3rd place...but Texas A&M and Baylor join us, the two teams have the tiebreaker.  Baylor has Texas and Tech left.  aTm has Tech and OSU.  Mizzou has ISU and kU.  I would say the chances of Mizzou getting a top 4 seed are about 50/50 right now.

Close win in Ames tonight, but we all know about Hilton Magic.  Add senior day to that and sandwich it between two big games for Mizzou and it is bound to be close.

Zaire BIG SHOT Taylor came through again tonight.  2 huge shots to get the game to overtime and the shot at the buzzer to win it.
