2009-10 Kansas State Wildcat Basketball
« on: October 22, 2009, 08:33:54 PM »
I'll start this thread with what I posted in another:

"This K-State team will be better than any I've seen in my lifetime. When I shared that sentiment with an old-timer, he said, "Best K-State team, ever." I think it's hard to compare, but I do believe that there's no ceiling to what this team can do.

Last year's team won 22 games last year, brings back every starter but Darren Kent, adds a top 25 recruiting class, brings in a McDonald's All-American, and a transfer who sat out last season that was a 5* prospect out of high school."

K-State was picked 4th in the preseason coaches poll. I don't think they'll finish worse than fourth and may go as high as 2nd. The 'Cats have consistently finished in the top four and are more talented than ever, now.

I think KSU could finish 3rd.  But I think Texas and Kansas will push 1-2 and KSU and OU will go 3-4.  Should be an exciting season.

I won't disagree, but I think the South is more balanced. K-State can finish second in the conference based on the unbalanced schedule.

That is true.  I could see KSU going anywhere from 12-4 to 14-2.  With likely losses at KU at OU or home against UT.  If they go 14-2 they could def finish 1-2 if best case happens.  I still think 12-4 gets them #3-#4.

I think 14-2 wins the league this year.

It's almost always been exciting to be a Kansas State basketball fan. Most of us, however, have lived through the dark ages of K-State basketball.

K-State will kickoff the season in earnest at the O'Reilly Auto Parts Puerto Rico Tipoff. From top to bottom the bracket looks like this (Preseason Coaches Ranking):

Game 1: (#22) Dayton v. (#20) Georgia Tech
Game 2: George Mason v. (#6) Villanova
Game 3: Indiana v. (RV) Mississippi
Game 4: Boston v. (RV) Kansas State

Definitely! I'm not sure how the top half of the bracket got so stacked, but I'm glad to not be playing on that side to begin with. I'd be happy with a couple of quality wins and a good game, on national TV against a ranked opponent in the final. Of course, I'd be ecstatic to go down there and win it all!

On a side note, one of Villanova's captains has been suspended for 10 games, and won't be in Puerto Rico.

K-State is playing an exhibition today with Pittsburg State.
Starters for the Wildcats are:
G Jacob Pullen
G Denis Clemente
F Dominque Sutton
F Curtis Kelly
C Jordan Henriquez

I impressed with the athleticism of Kelly and Henriquez. Jordan is 7' tall with a 7'6" wingspan and is a tremendous post defender. Kelly knows how to put his back to the basket and make a move to score.

Judge came in and scored inside and with a mid-range jumper.

My two year old looked up and said, "Whoa! They're playing fast."

K-State was slow out of the gate, tied at 13 almost half way through the first half, but got things going to take down Loyola-Chicago, 92-54.

K-State leads Western Illinois 31-20 at the half.
The outside shooting has been atrocious. My guess is that after a game on Friday and a tough practice yesterday, these guys don't have their legs under them.
The bright spot of the first half is the defense at the basket. Officially, K-State has 6 blocks, my guess is a review of the game would put that number at 8 or 9.

Sounds like Colon will be back for Puerto Rico, although hard to say how much PT he'll get.

Great for him, being Puerto Rican, himself. I think it will be hard to work him into the rotation against good competition. Not because he can't play, but because of the depth of talent and the flow that has been developed over the first two games.

'Cats beat Boston 80-70.

Was only able to listen to parts on the radio.

Freshman Rodney McGruder scored 19 and was 4-4 from 3-pt range.

K-State was pretty even with Ole Miss for a little more than a half.
Mississippi went on a 15-2 run in which no K-State defender seemed interested in stopping the ball coming up the floor.
The final score was 86-74, Rebs.

The 'Cats were rather unimpressive in beating IUPUI 70-57 at Sprint Center.
