OU Insider: Another 1-2 RB punch on the way for Sooners
Brennan Clay-Roy Finch could be another Chris Brown-DeMarco Murray

When he first heard the news, Brennan Clay admits he was surprised.

Three weeks after verbally committing to Oklahoma, Clay found out he wasn’t the only blue-chip running back heading to Norman.

So was Roy Finch, also one of the best prospects in the nation, who made his pledge to the Sooners last weekend.

But contrary to what message board posters from other fan bases were hoping, Clay wasn’t disappointed, nor wavering in his commitment.

Far from it, in fact.

"When I heard Roy committed, I was so excited. He’s a great ball player, his instincts are out of this world,” recalled Clay, who tracked down Finch’s number and phoned him the next day to congratulate him. "Roy and I in the same backfield — it’s going to be a problem for other teams for the next few years.”

In 2008, OU became the first school in college football history to produce a 4,000-yard passer, 1,000-yard receiver and a pair of 1,000-yard rushers in Chris Brown and DeMarco Murray.

Following the June commitments of Clay and Finch, dual-threat backs who will join highly touted quarterback Blake Bell in Norman next year, the Sooners appear to be loading up for a future run at the same milestone.

Both running backs, with their abilities to catch out of the backfield and make defenders miss in the open field, possess similar skill sets to Murray, who last year set the school record for all-purpose yards in a season.

The 6-foot, 193-pound Clay is ranked the No. 2 all-purpose back and No. 41 overall player in the nation by Rivals.

Clay is the first player ever to total 1,000 rushing and receiving yards in the same season in San Diego, which is where Heisman winners Marcus Allen, Reggie Bush, Rashaan Salaam and Ricky Williams also played their high school football.

Finch, who temporarily moved to Oklahoma and attended Edmond North his sophomore year, rushed for almost 1,300 yards and 25 touchdowns last season as a junior while also making several plays with his hands for Niceville, located in the Florida panhandle.

The 5-foot-8, 175-pound Finch is rated the nation’s No. 3 all-purpose back and No. 77 overall prospect.

But what should excite OU fans as much as their talents, is their attitudes and willingness already to embrace each other as teammates, even though they’ll be battling for carries one day in the Sooner backfield.

Last month, while speaking at the Sooner Caravan in Dallas, coach Bob Stoops lauded Brown and Murray for their friendship off the field despite competing for playing time in a crowded running back rotation that might cause others in the same situation to transfer away.

So far, despite growing up on opposite coastlines, it seems Clay and Finch are on track to developing a similar camaraderie.

"When we first talked, we just clicked. Like we were brothers,” Finch said. "I envision us having the same type of relationship Chris and DeMarco have.

"We know together we have a chance to do something special at Oklahoma.”

Who would you say is the headliner in this class CP? Blake Bell perhaps?

Most definitely Blake Bell as of right now. His upside is tremendous. But for OU fans, if Clay can recruit Stills, Jefferson, Uko or any of the three, to them he'd have to be the big headliner. He's really recruiting OU in Cali for us.

Our increased recruiting in that state btw, is a product of promoting Coach White(former Las Vegas's Bishop Gorman HS HC) to assistant recruiting coordinator(or something like that).

USC can't grab ALL the top talent in CA, so if OU competes with USC for that California talent, 2-3 a year could make a big difference.

Darius White, Scout's #3 WR drops Texas and says OU is his top school right now. At one point, he was considered a UT lock. I'm excited! OU has recieved 3 commits the last 2 days, 2 from the Orange Stark duo and one froma TE that will count towards the 2009 class.

Aaron Colvin, DB from Owasso, OK will be announcing his commitment tonight on TV in about an hour.

His choices: OU / OSU / MU / Tulsa

With all those running backs at OU, a switch to the wishbone seems inevitable.

Seems logical. We have 3 WR commits already, 2 @ 4 star (10 & 29 position rank) and 1 @ 3 star (77 position rank) while OU only has 1 and he is a 3 star 90 position rank. It would certainly would be helpful for OU since they, like Texas, will be breaking in a new QB. So, having a better WR than #90 is a good thing. Good luck. I hope you keep staying close with Texas in recruiting. I'd hate for OU to lag behind and hurt our schedule.

lol, yeah, me too.

OU is also in the top two for Justin McCay, whos' being recruited as a WR, and in the lead for Kyle Prater out of Illinois. Kenny Stills, who I think ends up at USC/LSU, is real good friends with B. Clay, and is giving OU a serious look.

OU actually has 3 WRs committed. McClain, Haynes and Powell. Although everyone says Powell is destined to be a CB. And Lake is going to be a DB. We're going to be taking 5-6 DBs this class. Which is odd. but this is one of the few classes OU has been able to go to the full 25, so we're shooting for the moon.

The West Orange Stark boys are speed demons. Their track times are crazy.

And I'm don't know about UT's situation, but OU fans aren't really worried about the QB next year. We'll have a very talented RS Soph in Landry Jones. The problem next for OU will be determined by how many underclassmen we lose to the draft.

McCay has finalized his decision and taken K-State off the table. He's supposed to talk to KSU coaches tonight or tomorrow.

  22. Trey Millard, FB/TE, (6'2, 248, 4.57), Columbia (Rock Bridge), MO
  23. Rashod Favors, LB, (6'1, 225, 4.48), Fort Worth (Dunbar), TX

The newest additions. I think Favors commit helps us with Darius White.

OU's new TE commit Austin Heywood, from Southmoore, OK has been upgraded by ESPN as their #46 ranked player and 3rd ranked TE overall.

He was previously an unknown due to the fact that he moved from Anadarko and transferred to Southmoore High this year. He had no tapes out until recently and was also thought to be a grade risk. OU reviewed his transcripts and saw that he could be eligible if he kept going the way he was and offered. OUESPN.com sent his tape into Scouts, Inc.(ESPN's recruiting service) and that's where the new ranking comes from. The last two TE recruits that were highly thought of coming out of the state of Oklahoma, turned out to be two of the top 3-5 in school history. Trent Smith and Jermaine Gresham. Haywood is expected to be the next one.

Austin Haywood, TE
Moore, OK
Southmoore High School
Scouts Grade: 82
ESPN150 Rank: 46
Position Rank: 3

Future Sooner tight end Austin Haywood enters ESPNU 150

Austin Haywood (Moore, Okla./Southmoore) was recently evaluated by the Scouts, Inc. staff and is now rated as the nation's No. 46 prospect and third ranked tight end.

ESPN's Craig Haubert said of the news, "The month of November has now seen its second prospect impressively leap into the ESPNU 150. First defensive end Adrian Hubbard (Norcross, Ga.) impressed with senior year film and made the big splash and now tight end Austin Haywood has done the same."

"With a recent evaluation as an offensive prospect, Haywood has proved to be worthy of a 150 ranking and is a great sleeper pick-up for Oklahoma. He is a big kid who possesses good speed and can be a serious match-up problem in the passing attack. With the Jermaine Gresham era over, a player like Haywood could be just what is needed to try and replace the very talented Sooner."

"While national signing day is getting ever closer Hubbard and Haywood prove it is never too late to discover talent and that is why the evaluation process continues."
