Great, great win.  Coach Bradley really turned things around in a hurry, he deserves a lot of credit.

Howard was great, Dempsey had another huge goal.

Haven't been able to watch the game yet, but looking at the stats I see the USA only had two shots on goal, and scored on both.  That tells me they went back to the counter attacking style I've been hoping for.  I still think this team is best suited to play that style.  Spain's team is built around fancy one touch passing, keeping everything on the ground and finding the openings in the defense, they're not good in the air like a German or English style of game.  If you can pack in the central defense and clog up those passing lanes, you force them into a style that doesn't suit them very well.  I can only guess since I haven't seen the game yet, but I think the US just matches up well against Spain and was able to exploit the small advantage they had.

I watched the game start to finish last night and was very much impressed.  Tactically, the US played a far superior game than Spain.  The US doesn't have a whole lot of height, but they at least have some at the back 4.  The defense played superb, if these four guys (Spector, Onyewu, DeMerit and Bocanegra) keep their health and good form in tact over the next year, we should be well set on defense compared to the last World Cup when we were a little unsettled on the back line.  I also think we finally found a position for the walking enigma known by the name of Clint Dempsey.  He fits well alongside Altidore, and it gives us an opening at the logjam in midfield.  We don't have any wicked talent at midfield, we have plenty of solid players that all bring something to the table.  Donovan is a given, so is Michael Bradley.  Ricardo Clark is in the process of locking up the defensive midfield spot, so moving Dempsey out of the right wing frees up a spot for one of our more creative players.  At this point, I think we've seen the last of Demarcus Beasley and Sascha Klesjtan.

I think that's a team that can get out of the group stage and maybe win a knockout round game or two.  Without some serious help along the way, which this tournament shows is possible, the US isn't a contender in the World Cup, but they can knock out a team or two and at least be a factor.

That was a great goal by Brazil.  Freekick, late in the game.  Clutch.

Brazil 3 USA 2, tough loss but I honestly think this will help long term not just for the federation but for our appearance worldwide.

Watching the replay of this game last night, I felt like a Tech fan watching us play Texas.  It's was damn good first half played by a team against superior talent across the board.  They worked their ass off to get the lead and it was well deserved, but you just knew that the better team's depth and class would show up at some point.  It was like watching Tech jump out to a 21-0 lead on Texas only to watch them inevitably come back and steal the win.

Depth was the key to the game I think.  When the US had to go to the bench for fresh players to finish off the game, there was a huge dropoff from the first 11 he had on the field.  Without Michael Bradley, there was nobody in the midfield with any gas in the tank that could hold possession and relieve the pressure off the back line.  Klesjtan and Adu are offensive guys, not defensively responsible.  Having a healthy Brian Ching to hold the ball up top would've helped.  Late in the game, the midfield just couldn't hang onto the ball while Brazil kept subbing in guys off their bench that are elite players.  Basically our team got worse as the game went on while Brazil got better.

The negatives of the tournament are just that, it showed that the US still lacks overall depth needed to make a deep run in the World Cup (that is twice as long as this tournament) and the overall quality of midfield players.  The positives are that we finally saw the US show some heart and passion.  If we can keep playing with that edge, we can be a dangerous team at the World Cup.  I finally started liking Landon Donovan during this tournament, he finally acted like a captain.  His quote after the game was great, "As a team, we're passed the point of wanting respect, we want to win".  We also showed that our top line talent can compete with the best teams, let's just hope that they all stay healthy and in top game shape over the next year.  Lastly, you see in all the time in sports, upstart teams who get to the finals for the first time usually wet their pants with the world watching, we couldn't stand the pressure against a team that had been their before, that experience along makes the entire tournament worth while.  If this team can go toe to toe with Brazil in a major tournament final, then playing at Mexico City in the Azteca in a World Cup qualifier shouldn't be as difficult.

Nice to see that the JV squad (maybe even freshman team) can make it to the Gold Cup Final.  Mexico on Sunday won't be easy for the inexperienced players.  There's nothing really at stake in this tournament anyway, there's no berth in another tournament at stake.  The real game against Mexico is in 3 weeks at the Azteca in a World Cup qualifier.

It's a great time of year to follow soccer.  There's not much in the news other than baseball, but those pennant races haven't heated up yet.  I usually lose interest in soccer during football season, then start paying more attention in March or April when the Champions League gets down to the wire.  Mostly I just watch the international games and Champions League..
