LSU hasn't won in eight years because Skip Bertman's succesor, Smoke Laval, was a disaster at head coach.
New coach Paul Mainieri, formerly at Notre Dame, had the Tigers in Omaha in only his second season in Baton Rouge.
Also, this year LSU is getting used to a new ballpark...a hitter's eye was installed after the first few games to help out the batter's. To further complicate matters, LSU has both new pitching and hitting coaches in 2009. LSU's pitching coach last year, Terry Rooney, was named head coach at UCF and took the hitting coach with him.
Again, I would point you to the results of the SEC tournament. Five wins by five different pitchers, all who went at least five innings, and four different closers. One of the pitchers, Bradshaw, pitched a complete game shutout over Georgia. The staff ERA for the six games LSU played in the SEC tournament was 2.34. That's six games in five days, mind you.
Not bad for a for first-year pitching coach David Grewe, who was a GA last year.
