NU recruiting 2010
« on: April 06, 2009, 04:51:40 PM »
It will be a small class since NU only has 13 seniors graduating this year.  There are estimated 16-20 scholarships that will be available for the 2010 class.  The usual number of players leaving early/transferring and non-qualifiers make up the 3-7 additional scholarships available.

Commit:                                           Measureables            Rivals   Rank 250     Scout  Pos. Rank
1. Andrew Rodriguez, Aurora, NE         OT 6-06 298              4*      #65             4*        #2 OT
Its nice to get this one locked up early.

2. Anterio Sloan,  West Helena, AR       CB  5-09 165 4.48       4*      #247           1*NR     not yet rated
Smallish but physical corner, good in the bump and run.  Well accustomed in handling big receivers.

Tyler Gabbert QB is close to selecting NU.  This confirms that there really is not bad blood between NU and the Gabbert family.

Tyler has always been said to be the better of the two brothers.  ESPN reported this about him after the EA sports elite 11 camp:

Quote
Best Prospect
Tyler Gabbert (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West)

He was clearly the most polished and fundamentally-sound player, especially in terms of footwork. It is a shame he does not possess the same height his brother -- Blaine Gabbert -- was blessed with, but he possesses a live arm. He showed excellent feet, drop speed and set up. The ball jumps out of his hand, especially in the short-to-intermediate passing game and he throws very well on the move.

Gabbert may not have had physical tools that were head and shoulders above a few other prospects in attendance, but he was definitely further along in terms of mechanics and fundamentals. We have seen this young man three times now in person and he has really improved, added bulk and gotten stronger. We have raised his grade some too, but his height (5-foot-11) will present challenges, if he is not in the spread.

http://footballrecruiting.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=78920&sport=1

Blaine is about 5 inches taller, FWIW.  However, Tyler had better stats in HS as a Junior compared to his brother.  Tyler took over for Blaine during Blaine's senior year after 4 games because of injury and seemed to outproduce Blaine.  Blaine seems like the prototype QB, while Tyler is more like a Joe Ganz looking at his size and ability to produce.  What do Mizzou fans know about him?

Huskers snag 4* WR Keeston Terry out of Blue Springs, MO. 6'2 180 lbs. Blazer. Solid pick up. Huskers now stand at 3 of 4 commits being 4*.

Any chances this will help us land Gabbert?  Or is he our #1 QB target?

You have to wonder if Gabbert would be willing to sit on the bench.  MU's former OC is now the head coach at Wyoming and they don't have any good QBs there and could offer Gabbert at least three years as the starter.

It just depends if he wants to play behind his brother again or if he thinks he can win the job from him.  They may want to play on the same team, but they might also want to see if maybe one day they could play against each other.

Regardless, it's nice to get some inroads to Missouri recruits again.

that argument never counts. Why do the top kids consistently go to the same schools if they fear riding the bench? The best love to compete.

That's true.  I am simply pointing out what other schools Gabbert could look at especially the ones that offered him.  Just since Gabbert is highly rated doesn't mean that he necessarily wants to compete for the job...there are QBs like him who would like to go where he has the best chance at playing early.  It's up to him to decide what he wants to do.

That would be cool...brothers going against each other in college football.  That could bring the best out of both players for the better or worse for NU fans.  ;)

Another thing is that you have to wonder how much longer Steve Watson would be at NU if the offense has a nice year statswise.  I'd keep my eye on Ron Zook's seat this coming season.  Watson has coached at Illinois as an assitant before and he is actually overdue for a head coaching position.

you mean Shawn Watson?  Yeah, if Nu does have a good offensive year, I'm not sure how much longer we'll keep him.  As long as Barney Cotton isn't calling the plays in his absence, I think we'll be fine.  He's a good OL coach, an OC he is not.

Tim Beck is Nebraska's next OC. He had a lot to do with our shift to the spread-option type of offense we ended the year with....it's a lot like what they run at KU, where he was the WR coach so he knows that type of system.  We will be fine in that regard.

QB Tyler Gabbert visited NU on Wednesday.  He has NEBRASKA! on his facebook page.  Many speculate that he will announce his commitment to NU soon.  While he's not as tall as his brother Blaine, it sounds like he is more of a gamer and the strongest arm at the Elite 11 camp.  This will be his third year to attend NU"s QB's camp this summer.

Tyler Gabbert made it official:

4* rivals, 3* scout.  6-0 190#,

Quote
"I've known Coach (Shawn) Watson for a while so that definitely helped a lot," Gabbert said. "Not only is he my position coach and offensive coordinator. He's like my head recruiter. My whole family going through (the recruiting process) a second time, everything I guess was a little smoother. With (Blaine's)experience at Nebraska, I was a little more comfortable Lincoln heading up there for camp and all that."

It will be Blaine vs Tyler in a few years if all works out for both of them.

According to Rivals.com, NU has 5 recruits, all have been rated 4* (for those that like to star gaze)

from Nebraska StatePaper.com
Quote
Last season for Parkway West High School, Gabbert threw for 1,850 yards and 18 touchdowns. Although only six-foot, and reasonably mobile Gabbert is a true West Coast Offense quarterback who, in previous interviews, has pledged to help whichever team he committed to – now Nebraska – fill out its recruiting class with quality offensive players. The first player whom Gabbert might be able to influence is Blue Springs, Mo., wide receiver Marcus Lucas, who currently holds offers from a number of schools, including Oklahoma.

Marcus Lucas is 6-5 195# 4* WR who is listed as the #18 WR by Rivals.  Let's hope Tyler is a great recruiter.

I think Gabbert is special, and I like this class so far.

However, OL Moudy wasn't given 4 STARs by Rivals.  3 STARs.

Yeah, I saw that after I had already posted.

Gabbert's numbers last year weren't spectacular.  They look better than his older brother Blaine's in his junior year though.  Doesn' anyone have more information on that?  I have read that he was the most polished among all the QB's at the Elite 11 camp when it came down to mechanics.

I think it's interesting, because Cody Green is like an opposite.  Green has the height, size, and speed/running ability, though his throwing mechanics need work.  It makes me think of Brook Berringer and Tommy Frazier in a way.  I wonder if this was intentional.

When all is said and done, NU will have a monster class. Runnin away with the North....

Plus, our OL is going to be absolutely HUGE in 3-4 years. We now will have 5-6 guys that are 6'7 300+ once Mike Moudy gets to campus, and we are looking at a few more that size in this class. That's some horses up front.

Which of the RB's do you think we have a real chance at? Everybody under the sun has offered Lache Seastrunk, does NU have any shot?

NU still needs to pick up a couple DT's, who are our best prospects?

Lache Seastrunk will not come to NU. I'm not sure of any targets we have at that spot. 2011 back Aaron Green seems to be our) focus.

I agree about DT. I've heard a lot about Beau Allen out of Minnesota, among scattered others. We will see how it all shakes out.

Aaron Green is going to be next years #1 RB in the nation, imo. I know OU, USC, UT and LSU, along with others like aTm etc have already either offered, or have guaranteed an offer is coming.

I don't think they can officially offer until next Feb.

Seastrunk imo is going to go to LSU or UT.

Aaron Green has already spent oodles of time in Lincoln. He and his brother are very very close and I think that will play in a big way when NU snags his commitment 8)

Juniors can officially be offered Sept. 1st.

So what you are saying is that Andrew Green could turn out to be a 2 for 1 commitment?  It didn't work with the Whaley's, but hopefully it works this time.  I would also say the time is about right since Helu and Castille will be Seniors in 2010 so the playing time will definitely be a possibility.

Aaron Green has been trying to recruit Tommie Saunders to USC. It is rumored by those around him that he is going to commit to USC before his senior year starts.

BTW, Tommie Saunders has sent USC a tape and is hoping to get an offer from them because of A. Green's recruiting him.

Well, I can PM you Tommie Saunders interviews he gave SoonersIllustrated.com if you want. I'll have to go find them, but it's not public interviews that I'm talking about.
