I think they are throwing money on something that simply won't work in Arizona.  Arizona pro sports fans are the fickle types.  They don't have the kind of disposable income that people from other sports cities have.  If the team is successful, then they'll get behind the team.  If not, they root for the teams they grew up rooting for before Phoenix got those teams.  People will argue that Phoenix is the largest city between Los Angeles and Houston (ahead of Denver) but it doesn't work that way since there is a large retirement community in that city and the state as well.

Joe Sakic hangs up the skates after a 20 year career.  Big loss for the Denver sports fan.  The Avs will have to find somebody to be the face of the team.

I dislike the Flames for personal reasons but these throwbacks are solid.

I consider this a slap in the face.  If the Flames are going retro, they should show the heritage behind their team name and where the team came from, this is the jersey they should wear...

I don't ever recall the Avs wearing Quebeck Nordiques jerseys in Denver.

Plus were you even alive when Atlanta had the Flames?  The Flames moved to Calagary in time for the 1980 season.

TSN of Canada is doing 30 teams in 30 days.  The Avs as the 29th team in the NHL?  That sure sucks and is very telling how much the Avs have fallen in the pecking order of the sports teams here in Colorado.  They were once #2 behind the Broncos as the team in Denver.  In over a decade, they'd be hard pressed to be above the Nugs and Rockies.

The Avs haven't been helped with Joe Sakic announcing his retirement and could be said to be a face-less organization right now.  Some new stars need to emerge for the Avs in order for the Avs to stay revelant in the Denver sports scene.

First change in Arizona of many

http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=4499904

The Coyotes will play the season in Arizona even if the Blackberry inventor buys the team.

I read somewhere that KC is in the running for the Coyotes as well.

I haven't paid attention to this thread so I'll be playing catch up.

http://www.sportingnews.com/blog/The_Grinder/entry/view/42689/second_team_in_toronto_wont_need_leafs_ok

If the NHL was to place a second team in the Greater Toronto area, the NHL wouldn't require the ok of the Maple Leafs.

I'm all for reversing the trend of placing NHL teams in cities that don't make any sense such as Miami and Phoenix.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/hockey/nhl/11/05/blue.jackets.ap/index.html

now Columbus is in trouble.

That isn't a good sign for the NHL since the Blue Jackets are the lone pro sports team in town.  You have to wonder how much of a disadvantage it is to have Ohio State in the same city and that school has a hockey team.

What do these two teams have in common?  They're the only tenant in their arenas, nobody to share the rent with so to speak.  Nobody ever talks about the Thrashers moving, despite the horrid ownership group they have in place, because two teams get the bills paid better than one, and their owners control the operating rights to Philips Arena, so as long as they keep the mortgage paid they're ok.  It was retarded of Phoenix to build a second arena and have the Suns and Coyotes play at separate buildings.  Same with Miami and the Heat/Panthers.  Even up north where hockey is popular, towns like Toronto, Boston, NYC, Philly, DC, Chicago, none of those teams play in separate arenas, they share the place with the basketball team.  Detroit is the only town with a NBA and NHL team and has two arenas.

I'm not against teams moving, the Coyotes need to get out of Dodge, but doubling up your market isn't a good idea.  Canadians aren't going to watch more hockey than they already do.  They're not exactly not watching the Leafs, Senators or Sabres as it is.  They would sell more tickets than the Coyotes, but that's only one small factor of a stable franchise, it won't add any TV viewers.  I think Kansas City or Seattle would be better choices.  Hell, Seattle even embraced soccer after the Sonics cruelly moved to OKC, that's almost like the sports equivalent of a girl turning lesbian after she catches her boyfriend cheating on her, so they'll surely cheer on some hockey.

Hockey in Seattle doesn't make sense to me...I don't see it working.  Kansas City is a different story.  Tulsa has been rumored as a city that will take a NHL team because they would be the only pro sports in that town.

I'm begginning to have my doubts about KC since they don't have another Sprint Center tenent and they won't support a losing franchise. But if they got a team that wins early different story because KC does support winners see when the Royals & Chiefs give them reason to.

Seattle is the first American city to win the Stanley Cup.  They're a good sports town, and they're starving for major sports teams.  They have a natural rival in Vancouver too.  I think they're the strongest market available for a hockey team.

I have discussed about the typical Seattle resident and sports and it's almost like oil and water.  The Mariners and Seahawks nearly bolted that town before their stadiums got built and the SuperSonics left because they couldn't get a new arena and that NBA team was the first pro sports team.  Don't be surprised if the NHL avoids Seattle due to that kind of reputation and the NBA might renege on their promise to bring NBA basketball back to the Emearld City.  I can truly speak from this since I went to school with a few people from that city or region.

I'm begginning to have my doubts about KC since they don't have another Sprint Center tenent and they won't support a losing franchise. But if they got a team that wins early different story because KC does support winners see when the Royals & Chiefs give them reason to.

I talked about KC before the Chiefs nosedived this season and when I watched Broncos-Chiefs, I wondered if that was a Broncos home game away from home due to the number of Broncos fans at Arrowhead.

That makes Tulsa more attractive and their arena is new and shiny:
