What do these two teams have in common? They're the only tenant in their arenas, nobody to share the rent with so to speak. Nobody ever talks about the Thrashers moving, despite the horrid ownership group they have in place, because two teams get the bills paid better than one, and their owners control the operating rights to Philips Arena, so as long as they keep the mortgage paid they're ok. It was retarded of Phoenix to build a second arena and have the Suns and Coyotes play at separate buildings. Same with Miami and the Heat/Panthers. Even up north where hockey is popular, towns like Toronto, Boston, NYC, Philly, DC, Chicago, none of those teams play in separate arenas, they share the place with the basketball team. Detroit is the only town with a NBA and NHL team and has two arenas.
I'm not against teams moving, the Coyotes need to get out of Dodge, but doubling up your market isn't a good idea. Canadians aren't going to watch more hockey than they already do. They're not exactly not watching the Leafs, Senators or Sabres as it is. They would sell more tickets than the Coyotes, but that's only one small factor of a stable franchise, it won't add any TV viewers. I think Kansas City or Seattle would be better choices. Hell, Seattle even embraced soccer after the Sonics cruelly moved to OKC, that's almost like the sports equivalent of a girl turning lesbian after she catches her boyfriend cheating on her, so they'll surely cheer on some hockey.
