NU Recruiting 2009
« on: October 17, 2008, 06:07:42 AM »
The Huskers picked up their 13th and 14th commitments for the Signing Class of 2009 today.

The first is a 3-star TE from San Diego named JT Kerr.  He is around 6'4'', 240 lbs.  He is more of a blocking TE, something that NU has been missing critically in the run game this year.

The second is a HUGE pickup for the future of Bo's D.  He is 4-star ILB Chris Williams from Abliene, Texas.  He is the 7th commit from Texas already in this class (the record is 9 from 2008 class).  He is 6', 230 lbs and runs a 4.52 40 yard dash.  He is the #13 ILB in the country, and #1 in Texas.  This is definitely a big pickup for the Huskers, and with a few wins over the next two weeks, hopefully there will be more big-time commits.

I saw that NU was pursuing Williams from Abilene but I never fully expected to land him.  This is a great job by the coaches.  He was recruited by Cotton, but I wonder if Beck had some connections on this one.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p409zIP1whU

Abilene was one upset loss away to Pflugerville from playing for the State Championship in 5A last year.  They have been a very strong team the last 5 years and even beat powerhouse South Lake Carroll (Chase Daniel's school) last year.

LB is a position of need and he will have a chance to compete for playing time next year.

Quote
And Williams would join a Blackshirts’ tradition — whenever it returns — that he’s already accustomed to.

Apparently, Abilene has been calling its defense the Blackshirts for about 10 years now.

“He’s excited about that, too,” Warren said with a laugh. “I don’t know if that came into the decision process.”

NU has been using a lot of TE's in this offense.  It will be interesting to see how Kerr is used.

mpalmer,

What are our chances with Gabe Lynn?

and now that we have a recruiting thread...

NU RB recruit Dontrayevous Robinson, is on the nationally ranked #1 and #3 HS team Euless Trinity.  They won the 5A Texas State Championship last year.  He might be the recruit that is under the radar when NU offered and he accepted.

We are in Gabe Lynn's final 4. My personal opinion is that it is between us and OU. I'm hopeful that Marvin Sanders can make him feel comfortable enough to come here.

As for Tray, his stock has dropped this year. He has struggled, mostly due to injury.

Nebraska gets its 15th known verbal commit today, with 3-star OT Jeremiah Sirles committing to the Huskers.  He is the #7 overall prospect in the state of Colorado.  He chose the Huskers over Oregon, among others.

From Huskerextra.com
Quote
Being a Colorado guy, he laughed a little when asked what he thought of Nebraska growing up.

“Growing up here, you learn that Big Red’s evil,” he said.

And he wasn’t so sure about Nebraska when an offer was extended by the previous Husker coaching staff.

“When I first got an offer when Coach (Bill) Callahan was there, I was kind of, ‘Not so much.’ But once I heard Coach (Bo) Pelini was coming, it was like, ‘All right, let’s see what he does.’ Then I took my summer unofficial visit (to Lincoln) and fell in love with the place.”

Sirles has been tracking the Husker season closely and is impressed by the way the team is progressing.

“They’re night and day from when they started the season and that’s something I’ve been looking at,” Sirles said. “The coaching staff has really got them going. Nobody’s really giving up. I just think that’s really an awesome reflection on the coaching staff there and that’s the kind of guys I want to play for.”

Huskers get another TX recruits.  CB Joshua Brown

Quote
JOSHUA BROWN, CB, 6-0, 175, 4.4, LANCASTER, TEXAS

“I’m going to commit to Coach Beck (Nebraska) tomorrow. He usually calls me about 7 to 7:30 PM when I get back from practice. I like the tradition and atmosphere at Nebraska. The whole state supports the team.” Brown said

“I’ve been to Nebraska’s summer camp it was good. I learned a lot of techniques at camp. I like Bo, he’s a cool guy. He doesn’t beat around the bushes. Nebraska coaches said I have a chance to play early next year, it’s up to me how I do.” Brown said

“I’m cleared by the Clearing House. I was cleared before the season.” Brown added

“Nebraska likes me in the bump and run, and I’m a physical player.” Brown said

“Minnesota and Utah are still recruiting me hard. They read on the Internet that my leaning towards Nebraska.” Brown said

“I’m excited about being a Husker.” Brown said

In the Big 12, you can never have too many cornerbacks and we need guys that can play bump and run.

Josh Brown likely won't be a Husker (unwanted...)

NU picked up #16 after their win over KU.

3-star LB Earnest Norman from Euless Trinity in Texas committed to the Huskers.  Norman was previously committed to KU ;)

He joins teammate Tray Robinson as a Big Red commit.  Hopefully the Huskers can snag Prinz Kande away now too.  :)

Just like teams took players from South Lake Carroll when they were ranked #1, NU now has a couple players from #1 (national rank) Euless Trinity.

Norman runs a 4.5.  He originally committed to Tulsa, then committed to KU, and is now committed to NU.  I want to say he's solid NU just because his cousin is a solid commit.

Chris Williams from Abilene hurt his knee friday after tripping over the 1st down chain and hitting a cement curb with his knee.  There is speculation that its a torn ligament, but no one has confirmed anything.

Huskers pick up #17 with 4-star DB Dijon Washington out of CA.  He's 6'0, 175 lbs and lightning quick.  Good pick-up.  Some questions about his academics, so we'll see how that ends up.

his nickname is "Missile" because he's able to deliver the explosive hit.  This is a great pickup because it's a position of need.

He has had offers from Oregon St., Washington, and interest from USC.  He probably would have had an offer from USC if his academics were sound.  We'll see if he qualifies.

NU also received our first commit for 2010.  Andrew Rodriguez, OL, NE Class B State Champion Aurora.  6'6" 300lbs originally from Harlem, NYC, NY.  He moved to NE a couple years ago with his brother.  He has received letters of interest from LSU, Texas, and Alabama, but feels that he is Nebraskan now

http://footballrecruiting.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=68858

After next year, NU will need to recruit OL next recruiting season since we have the bulk of the guys contributing right now as sophomores.

NU steals another KU commit in 3 star DE Kevin Young. Let's complete the trifecta and get Kande!

He was at the NU vs CU game and said after the game that he has never seen anything like that.  Seeing the atmosphere and the way the NU coaches and players responded made him feel like he belongs in Lincoln despite all the pressure he had to go to KU.  Bo had asked him several times if he was sure before accepting his commitment.  Bo wanted it to be solid, and it is.  Young is undersized, but should become a good pass rusher after he is bulked up in the S&C program.

Meanwhile, Cody Green, NU's 4* recruit led his team to the quarterfinals in the state playoffs.  In his last playoff game over a powerhouse team in El Campo, he ran for 178 yards and passed for another 210 completing 70% of his passes.

The next game for Green and Dayton HS is Brenham.  That is the school where Jarrett Lee for LSU came out of.

Huskers pick up another commit today.  JUCO 3-star WR Brandon Kinnie from Fort Scott CC committed to the Huskers today.  He is 6'3 and 215.  He's a lot like Mo Purify.  I expect him to be a big-time target in the Huskers offense next year.  With just 21 seniors this season, there aren't a lot of scholarships left, probably between 4-6 spots left in the Huskers class.

Some targets include:
DT Latu Heimuli
DT Corey Adams (likely OSU/ASU bound)
CB Andrew Green
S Lester White
RB Rex Burkhead
RB Al-Terek McBurse

Brandon Kinne's measurables;
He runs a 4.37 40
I see another source has him listed as 6'5"
He's a Juco, but has 3 years to play 3.

NU is also recruiting two of his teammates that are ranked 4*, But Kinne has been the player that their coach has raved about this year.

Cody Green helps out his team to advance to the 4a state semifinals after beating a powerhouse in Brenham.

With their RB injured in this game, Green took over the rushing offense.
He had 259 yards rushing with 229 of it in the first half.
He only attempted 7 passes and completed 3 for 71 yards. (he is completing 65% of his passes for the year)
He had 4 TD's total.  2 rushing, 2 passing.

He also added 6 more points since he is also the PAT kicker.

Green is coming to play Kerrville Tivy in Georgetown next weekend.  I will do what I can to attend.  Maybe I will run into some NU coaches.

Huskers picked up 2 CB commits in one day today.

CB Lazarri Middleton, 6'1 190 lbs, 4.4 40 time.  He isn't currently ranked by Rivals, as he is relatively new to the scene, but is projected as a middle 3-star.  He comes from Long Beach Poly in California, which produces 4-5 D-I players a year, typically 1 or 2 to USC.

CB Dejon Gomes is a mid-year JUCO transfer.  He is about 5'11'' to 6'0, and about 190 lbs as well.  He will come in with 3 to play 2, but I fully expect he will be seeing a lot of PT next year, especially with the loss of Murillo.

Only about 3-4 spots left in the Husker class this year:
1 RB
1 DT
1 DE
1 WR

I wonder if NU is looking to moving some of the corners to play safety.  Having big/tall safeties that can cover would be a huge advantage in this conference.
or
With Gomes, it looks as though NU will have more depth at DB and won't have to start freshmen walk-ons as often.

Probably the best thing about Gomes committing is that he won't be playing at JUCO U the rebuilding project. (KSU)

I wouldn't be surprised to see West or Hagg at safety next year. West started out at safety so we will see.

I just got home from watching Cody Green play in the State Semifinals.

He kicked the game winning FG to win 31-28.

Tivy HS from Kerrville keyed on Green (Dayton HS) the entire game to shut down his running.  Tivy played good solid defense and were excellent tacklers.  It was a pretty windy game so it was very difficult to throw downfield so Green and Dayton were really trying to push it on the ground.

Dayton's starting center was injured and his reserve had a couple crucial bad snaps on 4th down conversions.  Green wasn't always getting good snaps and it is very important when they rely heavily on the zone read.

Green's stats:
rushed 22 times for 59 yards
10 of 14 for 132 yards and 2 TDs passing, no interceptions.

AJ Dugat who committed to Houston was impressive.  He returned a kick for a TD, was an excellent receiver for Green, and took the ball away from a Tivy receiver (he played defense on Tivy's final drive) and returned it back to around the 20 yard line.  That set up the tie breaking winning FG of Cody Green's.  Dugat did have a costly fumble though that led to a Tivy TD.

What was most impressive about Green is he never seemed to get frustrated.  He always stayed calm and cool even though Tivy's gameplan was to stop him from running at all costs.  It wasn't until Dayton's final drive that Dayton's coach allowed Green to pass downfield (with the wind) and Tivy couldn't hold.  Green's passes were right on the mark nearly every time.  A couple were drops otherwise he would have been 12-14 passing.  I would say about half his yards passing came from Dugat making a play after the catch.

The game tieing TD pass, Green through it perfectly to a guy who hadn't been used the entire game.  It was a great call and a tough pass through coverage on the goaline on a great read.

After the game, I had fans from Dayton coming up to me to tell me that we're getting a really good kid.  Everyone spoke highly of him after the game.

I came into this game expecting to see a Vince Young type player, but I couldn't get past the fact that he reminds me of Josh Freeman.  I think the Husker coaches will do a better job with Green than Prince did with Freeman.

Besides, Green already has a lot more integrity than Freeman and will have the chance to become a HS State Champion next week.

It seems that teams Dayton playes in the playoffs can either stop Dugat or Green, but they can't stop them both.  Sulphur Springs is a powerhouse football team east of Dallas.

That's not fair to Freeman. He did what he thought was best. I've personally talked to him, and he's a great person.

Which is also a myth.   There was a few text messages sent, but that wasn't the only contact about him switching.  He's personally attested to the truth and I've heard it from multiple people that it was different than portrayed. I'm sure JJ can add to the story, as he's also met Josh a few times.

Huskers grab 6' 180 lb CB Andrew Green from San Antonio as their newest commit. Andrew is a 5.7 3-star, which is the highest 3-star ranking, and also ranked as the 3rd most physical CB in the country by Rivals. His younger brother Aaron is a sophomore) and will be a top 100 recruit of 2011 so hopefully we can snag him down the road.
