Doesn't seem like much of a punishment. But if I remember correctly, it wasn't that serious to begin with.

I love when an "improper benefit" is benefiting the student who is an athlete. Oh well. Punishment for it is rather weak.

I remember this now. And this is why I said, "it wasn't that serious to begin with".

I'm not going to bag on NU for this. If they were giving tests away for free*cough*KU*cough* or something similar, I could see raising my voice a bit. But for this, punishment kind of fits the crime. Weak crime=weak punishment.

The punishment was actually too harsh.

This is from the NCAA:

After outlining the violations and the punishment (including "public reprimand and censure!"), it adds a side note that reads, in part, "N.C.A.A. President Mark Emmert and members have recognized that numerous rules, such as those stating athletic scholarships can be used to purchase mandatory but not 'recommended' textbooks, are overly prescriptive and do not support our values."

The rule doesn't support your values, as YOU admit, yet you're still going to dish out any form of punishment?  Talk about IDIOTIC!

NCAA wants us to believe they are serious about putting the "student" in "student athlete," yet they won't allow scholarships to cover textbooks that professors recommend to students as helpful reading?

Again..truly idiotic and hypocritical.

They should include that into scholarships now that they are thinking of expanding it to $2000 more for spending money per athlete.
