I'm pretty sure the key to winning in the Pac-10 is getting your students in the stand on time.
How can Colorado have two great players and still be so bad? Will they get more talented players, or just implode when these leave?
Higgins and Burks are two very good players despite their flaws. Higgins nearly choked away the win for the Buffs by missing three FTs before the game went to OT. CU lost at CSU last year because Higgins was 1-10 from the FT line that night. When the pressure gets to him, he folds his tents. Burks is slowly improving his defense but that is not his strong suit.
The problem for CU basketball for years has been the lack of a big man in the paint. Harris-Tunks had a monster preseason until he blew out his knee and was lost for the season. He is 6-11 and there is Eckloff at 6-10 but I don't see him on the floor that often and if a big man is sorely lacking and yet someone like Eckloff isn't starting, it's apparent that he is not the answer in that situation. Ben Mills, a seven footer, is redshirting this year and Dufault at 6-9 has became the man in the paint but rebounding remains an issue for the Buffs.
The Buffs should be able to win against the more turnover prone teams but if the Buffs play a team that plays well and doesn't turn the ball over, I'm not too confident the Buffs will win that game but they will still play hard. If the Buffs had a man in the paint who could rebound and smash the basketball down the throats of opposing defenses, CU would definetly be a lock for an upper level finish in the Big 12.
After Higgins and Burks leave, I'm not that concerned...CU has three of the top 25 CA kids coming next season and the new practice facility under construction has been a huge help in recruiting for the Buffs with both basketball programs and volleyball programs. WBB got the Gatorade Player of the Year from Oregon. The future of Buff basketball is still very bright...IF they can get inside help.
