Bubba Starling, the #3 ranked dual threat QB in the nation, just committed to NU.

He had offers from Alabama, Notre Dame, Arizona, Louisville, Kansas, Kansas State, Texas Tech and others.

6'5 193 lbs from Kansas

Looks like NU's move to the Big Ten is already paying off in recruiting.  I guess NU's color and the Rose Bowl does go together nicely.  :coolsmiley:

The closest he'll get to Memorial will be sitting in a luxury box paid for by the $$$$$ he'll make at next June's MLB  draft.

If he is smart he will.  You don't waste a mid 90's heater and top 50 draft pick to be a dual threat QB anywhere.

You mean the Heisman Trophy winning Eric Crouch.  Who would want to be him?

There was a time in the Ricky Williams and Cedric Benson days when a player could get paid to play minor league baseball and play football.  Is that still a possibility?

Bubba would be good for the program if he happens to fore go the money.

I'm confident we will see him in Scarlet and Cream.

Especially, Nebrasaka. No one wants to be the next Eric Crouch.

Yeah, everyone hates being a college football legend.  ::)

I'd say there's about a 70% chance he goes to college instead of going straight to the minor leagues.

First of all, his family is rich.  He doesn't need the money.  If he's not selected in the first round of the draft, he's going to college.

He was down to Notre Dame and Nebraska.  Notre Dame just fired their baseball coach, and he then chooses Nebraska.  He's planning on playing football and baseball in college.

I like Starling's numbers in HS ball although they are not quite as legendary to me as Cody Green's HS numbers were.

How does NU's QB lineup look like in 2011 when the Corn start Big Ten play?

How does NU's QB lineup look like in 2011 when the Corn start Big Ten play?

All we can go on at this point is what happened in Spring practice.

redshirt freshman Taylor Martinez (California 5A player of the year and State champion) stole the show.  He is a great runner and has a head for football.  If I remember right, his first two series in the spring game, running a vanilla offense against a vanilla defense, he threw two TD passes in his first 3 possessions against a defense that had some defensive starters.

Cody Green will depend on how comfortable he gets with the offense.  He has the tools and has tied the QB record for the 10 yard dash, so he is one of the fastest and biggest QB's we've ever had.  He will be great in a zone read or wildcat offense.

Kody Spano was injured last year.

If Martinez is able to beat out Green in Fall camp, I wonder if a redshirt for Green is a possibility.  I don't think the coaches will because he has too much talent to sit out a year, but having him for an extra year would be bonus.

Drafted #5 overall in the MLB draft to the KC Royals.

$6-$8M on the way in signing bonus.

While a fan of Nebraska there is no way that the Kansas City Royals cannot sign Starling. They lose too much from the fan base for not signing the kid who lives 30 miles from the K.

Reports are that Starling wanted to be drafted and play for KC.

I don't think it mattered who the team was.... he was going to be drafted and given a hefty signing bonus, and he was/is going to sign a deal.

Few families are so rich that they walk away from $8M.

If he hadn't been top 15, or even first round pick, the decision would have been much different.

We'll see how much money the Royals throw his way.

I honestly still would not be surprised if he skipped on it. There are a lot of reports that he doesn't feel ready for the real world, especially riding around on buses all year and staying in crappy motels. He is very, very close with his family and he may want to stay close to home. Baseball will still be there in 3 years.

That being said, I expect him to sign his contract near the deadline, but still would not be surprised if he stuck it out at Nebraska for a few years.

Starling would be in NW Ark (double A) and probably Omaha in the next three years they'll fast track him like Hosmer, Moustockus and yes Alex Gordon. Still will be a tough call for him especially since he'll probably get $6-7 million in a signing bonus.

Some people aren't driven by money though, which is what i've read a lot about him. That much money is hard to turn down, but at the same time, there is a lot of talk about him not feeling like he's ready for the pros yet. I still expect him to sign on August 15th, breaking our hearts.

Saying "baseball will be there in 3 years" isn't any more convincing than "football will be there in 3 years".... oh, and you'll be $6M wealthier.

one key distinction you are overlooking there Lynch: If he goes baseball now, he will not be playing football during those three years, whereas if he comes to Nebraska, he WILL stay playing baseball.  I don't think he can be a QB in three years if he doesn't play. He already needs quite a bit of work, that much time will make him just another athlete. I guess if he doesn't care about what position, then sure, you're right.

I guess I just don't see it as a real close-call decision.

Offer currently stands just north of $6 million. Supposed to be in Lincoln on Saturday...we'll see if he shows up.

He thinks its delusional to think Starling could choose football...even though he made that comment reading posts that were made a year ago, well before the reality set in.

Also, Starling is enrolled in two classes this summer session and moved into his dorms and working out with the team.

Currently the Royals offered $6.2 million which lead to Starling doing what we knew he do but it'll be interesting if KC hits Boras $8 million figure which I expect them to.
