Independence Day at Bricktown!
« on: June 18, 2010, 09:28:05 PM »
Nothing like celebrating the 4th with friends at a AAA Baseball Game, tossing back some cold ones, and then watching a brilliant fireworks display while God Bless America gets pumped over the PA System. This will be my second trip to OKC for the 4th, and there is a damn good chance it becomes a regular thing for the 4th. If you get a chance, you need to get to a local game for the 4th of July just for the atmosphere after the game once the fireworks start firing. It's damn near poetic.

Bricktown was designed to have the same look and feel as Arlington. Without much to go on, I have to think it's one of the top AAA parks out there. Went to the Springfield/Drillers game for my birtday last weekend (11th), and for a AA park it was pretty damn nice. I haven't had a chance to check out the Drillers' new stadium, ONEOK, but I've heard it is up there. Only about 45 minutes from there, so I'll have to take the short drive to catch a couple of games before the season finishes.

SN1: The last time I went the entire crowd was into it. And by then, 75% of the adult crowd was a few beers in, when God Bless America and Proud to be an American played, it damn near moved me to tears. Between the beer, the fireworks, and the outright love for the U.S.A. by the entire crowd, you couldn't help but absorb it and enjoy.

NICE...!!!

you should honestly check out Whataburger though......i'm thinking you'll drool at the site.

ain't too many ball parks where you can look out and see a tall bridge coming down and look off to your left and see a huge cargo carrier floating by.
and it's close to the beach.

pics wouldn't do it justice.

If I had the money, I'd start a stadium tour beginning with A and moving up through MLB. Something about a hot dog, cold beer, and the sight of baseball being played on a perfectly manicured field that just speaks to me. The only thing that comes close to it is the College Football atmosphere, but CFB games are so intense it's hard to just sit back and enjoy.

i hear ya Live4T - i prefer Double A ball over MLB any day of the week. and it's for the reasons you mentioned.
the quaint camaraderie between the fans and the future stars of the mlb is like no other. smaller stadiums afford the fan photo and autograph ops.

i was in attendance when Corpus won the Double AA title in extra innings. it was just so cool.

plus the beer and food is cheaper!

Depends on where you go for the cheaper comment. At Springfield, the beers were $6.50/ea. Unless they've gone up around the leagues, that's higher than OKC's AAA prices. Hell, they're $7.50/ea in St. Louis. Last time I was in OKC for a game they were $5, which I don't consider too bad since they only have kegs that they serve out of.

My favorite days are $1 dog and $1 beer nights at OKC. I need to check out Tulsa's schedule for either of those.

Fan friendly environment is what I like about minor league ball. At Springfield my niece got to go down before the game and ended up with a brand new auto-ball with I think 8 sigs on it. She's proud of it. :)

I'm going to have to make it to one or two of the AAA championship series games since it looks like OKC has a good shot at making it. I remember watching Carlos Pena play there before he got called up by the Rangers. You could simply tell that he was going to make it into the Show.

Who was the MLB player that got in trouble, from the Colorado Rockies, for making racial comments and was sent back down to AAA? He was at OKC and we went and watched him there.

lol, you can jsut tell a difference with some of those guys. He crushed it everytime he went up to bat.

I'm thinking it was someone else. I could be wrong as I did not, nor do I yet, follow MLB very closely.

I just remember how cool it was he was visiting OKC the day we went.

i don't know SoonerNation, but i will say this: they taste alot better at the ball park. they're seasoned differently and have a better flavor.

Just took the GF to her first baseball game, a semi-pro team here in Lincoln.  Was afraid she wouldn't really like it and she was a bit iffy about going, but turns out we have a new baseball fan on our hands.

I'm going to go see my Yankees play next year in Yankee stadium. Always wanted to. Of all the places I have been and visited NYC is one of the few stops I haven't made.
